Business is, as they say, booming. If people could inject themselves with mindcasts, they would.

At the end of the first day, I wait with the other parents outside. Children pour from the mouth of the school, and I hope the kid will find a way to blend in. We once had dreams of our spawn disrupting the Department, going full-blown anarchist, but now I only dream of her survival. A selfish wish, yes, but I’ve come to terms with my selfishness, its ordinary, comfortable shape. Once the kid spots me, she picks up speed and does a running leap into my arms like she hasn’t done in years.

“How was your first day?” I ask, swinging her around.

“Put me down first and I’ll tell you,” she says, kicking the air.

“Okay, you’re down, now spill.”

“You’re so annoying,” she smirks, waiting to see how I will react. She fixes her tutu. “Why are you smiling? I said something rude!”

“It’s nice, isn’t it?”

“What is?”

“To love someone so much.”

“So much what?”

“That you can love the annoyance, too,” I say, giving her a light shove.
